                GUACA HISTORY



Guaca is a Colombian municipality located in the department of Santander; It is part of the province of García Rovira, founded on April 12, 1553 by Lieutenant Ortún Velásquez

 The history of Guaca as well as that of the country can be classified into three parts:

The Indigenous Age, Hispanic Era and Republican Era. First, the Indigenous era: The word GUACA comes from the indigenous voice “Gua: Monte; Hill; never Below ”which translates a place located at the bottom of the“ Hidden or buried treasure ”hill, these indigenous people were chitareros, belonging to the Guanes group, members of the Chibcha family that inhabited the Cundíboyacense highlands. The chitareros were distributed in four groups: Cámara, El Cerrito, Mongotocoro and Listara.

Second, Hispanic era: The historical facts of the natives were transferred with the arrival of the European conquerors, as well as the rest of the American Continent. Guaca was discovered by the German Ambrosio Alfinger, who had been hired by the bankers “Bartolomé and Antonio Welser”. From German company of Ausburg. During the independent movements, the territories of Guaca were direct scenes of some meetings and some heroes appear as Lieutenant Juan José Meneses, who died at the Ortega Pass (June 20, 1817) and Sergeant Francisco Neuto, who died in Barcelona, ​​state of Anzoátegui Venezuela (July 18, 1819).
